Train Like a Kenyan - KATA Kenya
Kenyan Athletics Training Academy (KATA) - Thika, Kenya
Located one hour from Nairobi, KATA offers a unique running retreat experience, where guests train alongside elite Kenyan athletes. Our Kenyan athletes, many of whom are on the path to becoming professional runners, help guests achieve their personal bests.
Train Like a Kenyan
When you join the KATA Running Program, you'll learn the techniques that make Kenyan runners world-renowned. With six private guest rooms, each featuring a double bed and en-suite bathroom, KATA provides a comfortable and supportive environment. The facility includes 26 rooms, with staff housing, offices, massage rooms, a Runners Lounge with a large screen, an Olympic Dining Hall, laundry, a kitchen, and a courtyard.
For Dedicated Athletes
KATA is exclusively for athletes focused on improving their race times, setting personal records, or aspiring to become champions or professional runners. “We offer world-class training, authentic Kenyan runner’s food, and an inspiring environment,” says founder and director Bob Anderson.
Meet the Team
KATA’s head coach John, sprint coach Julius, and middle-distance coach Joseph bring extensive experience to guide you, whether you're training for sprints, middle distances, or even ultra-marathons. Our team of 20-28 Kenyan athletes trains alongside our guests, creating a motivating atmosphere.
A Seamless Experience
With an all-inclusive package, KATA provides private rooms, three meals a day tailored to a runner’s diet, and top-tier coaching—all for just $375 per week, with a one week minimum stay. We take care of everything from airport pickup to accommodation, so all you need is a passport and flight to Nairobi.
Meet Bob Anderson, KATA Founder
Bob Anderson, a lifelong runner and the founder of Runner’s World magazine, created KATA to offer the same opportunity that has benefited countless athletes worldwide. Bob’s running achievements, from a 2:08.5 half-mile at 15 to a 59:17 ten-mile at 53, exemplify his deep commitment to the sport. Now 76, he still competes in 10Ks and 5Ks with impressive times. A Long Run, a feature-length documentary, highlights his 50-race challenge.
