Endurance & Legacy: The Story Behind KATA Running Retreat
Bob Anderson, founder of the KATA Running Retreat, has dedicated his life to the sport of running. He launched Runner's World magazine in 1966 at just 17 years old, growing it to over two and a half million readers before selling it to Rodale Press in 1984. A lifelong runner, Bob began on February 19, 1962, and has continued to push his limits across decades. Notably, at 15, he ran a 2:08.5 in the 880, clocked a 59:17 ten-mile at 53, and ran 50 races in 2012, covering 350.8 miles at an impressive 6:59 per mile. This journey was documented in the film A Long Run, showcasing his passion and perseverance.
Bob’s journey led him to create KATA (Kenyan Athletics Training Academy) in Kenya, fostering an elite training ground for runners. Now, in October 2024, he proudly opened KATA Portugal, extending his vision of excellence and community to Europe.
At 76, Bob can still race a 10K in under 53 minutes and a 5K in under 26 minutes, inspiring athletes of all levels. Join us at KATA Running Retreat to experience world-class training in a setting that honors the legacy and spirit of running.

Getting to Anderson Manor Retreat and Hotel
The journey to Anderson Manor Retreat and Hotel is a memorable part of the experience. As the base for KATA Running Retreat Portugal and home to the Anderson Manor Collection, this destination offers more than just a place to stay – it’s a unique retreat combining heritage, wellness, and luxury.
If you’re flying into Lisbon, we recommend scheduling your arrival at Lisbon International Airport before 11:30 a.m. Once you've completed immigration and collected your luggage, head outside to catch a taxi to the Oriente train station. Taxis are typically quicker and more economical than Uber and usually have no wait. If you choose a taxi, confirm with the driver if they accept credit cards unless you have at least 12 euros on hand.
To get to Castelo Branco by train, you may want to purchase your ticket online in advance through OMIO, upgrading to first class for a more comfortable journey for a few extra euros. Tickets cost around 20 euros. Once at the station, head to Platform 5. If you prefer to buy your ticket at the station, you can do so at a kiosk or ticket desk.
The train journey to Castelo Branco is beautiful and relaxing. We recommend the 1:23 p.m. departure, which offers minimal stops and takes approximately 2.5 hours, passing through mountains and along rivers. First-class passengers have access to Wi-Fi, food, and drinks. If you plan to spend a night in Lisbon, the 8:36 a.m. departure the next day is an excellent option.
Upon arrival in Castelo Branco, one of our team members will greet you and transport you by car to Anderson Manor Hotel (KATA Portugal) at Rua do Penedo 8, 6000-580 Monforte da Beira, Central Portugal. This charming location is home not only to the KATA Running Retreat but also to the Anderson Manor Collection, a curated selection of antiques and collectibles.
While the owners, Bob and Catherine Anderson, usually take the train, they have explored other travel options. Renting a car is possible but generally unnecessary and takes about the same time, while the bus is a more budget-friendly alternative – less scenic but certainly an option for travelers.
