The Story Behind KATA Running Retreat
Bob Anderson, founder of the KATA Running Retreat along with his wife Catherine, has dedicated his life to the sport of running. He launched Runner's World magazine in 1966 at just 17 years old, growing it to over two and a half million readers before selling it to Rodale Press in 1984.
A lifelong runner, Bob began on February 19, 1962, and has continued to push his limits across decades. Notably, at 15, he ran a 2:08.5 in the 880, clocked a 59:17 ten-mile at 53, and ran 50 races in 2012, covering 350.8 miles at an impressive 6:59 per mile. This journey was documented in the film A Long Run, showcasing his passion and perseverance.
Bob’s journey led him to create KATA (Kenyan Athletics Training Academy) in Kenya, fostering an elite training ground for runners. Now, in October 2024, he proudly opened KATA Portugal, extending his vision of excellence and community to Europe. At 77, Bob can still race a 10K in under 53 minutes and a 5K in under 25 minutes, inspiring athletes of all levels.
